Week 5

Today is January 28th, and I've been on my diet for 4 weeks and 3 days :-) As of yesterday, my total weight loss is 14lbs. I'm so excited! I finally fit into the pajamas I received for Christmas in 2012 LOL It really sucks not being able to fit into things, doesn't it?

Anyhoo, I've continued to follow the plan as closely as I can. On days I exercise, I tend to have two extra boxes of protein and 1 extra box of carbs. The week I was sick with Strep Throat was my plateau/increase week. I actually gained 2 lbs - probably from being completely sedentary for 6 days. As soon as I started exercising again though, the scale started to move down again. Whew!

I found myself starting to get bloated easily again after meals so I started taking a pro-biotic and it's already helping. I had to take antibiotics for 10 days for Strep Throat which is what led to the bloating. The antibiotics wiped out all the good bacteria that helps me digest my food appropriately. Hopefully in another week or so, I'll be back to feeling normal.

The last few days I've felt a little spacey and lightheaded. Not sure why. I'm getting plenty of food on a regular basis so I don't believe it's my blood-sugar. I'm going to give it a few more days before I call Dr. Sobyl to see if it goes away. I'm also wondering if it could be my iron levels? I heard that you have know of an iron deficiency before taking a supplement though. That would require another blood test. Kris, have you had any lightheaded or dizziness symptoms?

How are you all doing?? I saw Shelly yesterday and she looks great! She said she was up to 8 lbs lost - WOOOOO HOOOOOO!!!

Let us know how you're doing! Kathy

A New Week!

Monday, January 13, 2014

Good morning! How was everyone's weekend? Mine was relaxing and fun. A full day of scrapbooking on Saturday and a fart-around day on Sunday. I did well all week with eating but on Sunday I was bored/hungry and kept thinking about eating all day. It was a little torturous. I ate a couple extra protein and carb boxes to help stave off the hunger. I still have not had any breads, grains or sugars though. And I even sat right next to a large basket of candy and chocolate for 12 hours scrapbooking without even being tempted! Thank goodness for sugarless gum! Ha! Sometimes I chew as if I'm eating it!

Weighed myself yesterday and was a total of 10 lbs down. Amazing. Hooray for proteins and veggies! My new best friends.

Made a tri-tip for dinner last night and put it over lettuce with red onions, tomatoes, avocado, red bell peppers, craisins, and candied walnuts. Deeeeeelish! Okay so the candied walnuts are probably not allowed on the diet but I had to do it :-o.

What fun meals or recipes have kept you eating healthy this week? Has anyone been continuing to drink alcohol? I stopped entirely b/c of the sugar in wine. I kinda miss it! Especially since Mike bought me a wine membership to Kalyra for Christmas :-o

Okay, some go-to snacks for me this week:

Good Earth Tea (the original spicy blend)
Celery
Almonds
Lo-fat String Cheese
Apples
Pears
Smoothie with frozen blueberries and banana
Slice of deli turkey
Sliced cucumber
Sugarless Gum

What are your go-to snacks? Hope you're all doing well!! Talk to you soon, Kathy

I'm no longer a hostage!

January 8, 2014

Today marks my 11th day on the jumpstart diet. I can't believe how not hungry I am all day long. I am no longer hostage to food! I eat every three hours and within 30 minutes to one hour of waking up. Miraculously I have not cheated on this diet like diets before and it's working incredibly. Every day I get on the scale and the numbers keep going down and down. Some days only by .2 other days .4 and .6, it's fabulous! Someone please pinch me.

I know the first week or two is about losing a lot of bloat and water weight. But as of this morning my scale says that I am 8 pounds lighter than when I started 11 days ago. Unbelievable. I am waiting for a plateau to arrive any day. I hope I survive it when it comes.

Aside from the weight-loss, I feel a lot better. My pants are starting to fit better. I have more energy, especially now that my head cold is subsiding. And I'm not hungry all day long. It is so weird. But oh so nice!

I haven't been doing vigorous exercise lately because of my head cold. But I plan to start again tomorrow with my Jillian Michaels workout DVDs. I wonder if that is going to change my weight-loss at all? I'll be sure to let you know.

That's the update on me. How are you all doing? I heard from Kris yesterday that she's up to almost 10 pounds. Go Kris!!!

Happy and healthy eating to you all, Kathy

No Caffeine!!

Hi all! Well, today is the day I decided to stop drinking diet soda... So far so good. Was able to drink almost 2 and a half liters of water, yay me! No headache either, so I am guessing this is a good sign and I will continue to move forward. Now all I need todo is give up my sugar habit!

Hello!

Hi there, I'm Kris. I live in Mill Valley, just outside San Francisco, one town past Sausalito. I'm here because Kathy is my sister, and I'm on a quest to lose thirty pounds.

Two years ago I started a new job managing the PR and Social media for BevMo!, which means I go out and drink alcohol a lot. It's a great job, but fattening! Between all the yummy cocktails, wine, amazing dinners and being almost 50 (and in menopause) I gained 20 pounds!!

I decided I had enough. I refused to buy a new pair of black pants in the next size. I had to change.

I joined Jump Start MD a few weeks before Christmas because I knew if I waited I would have 5 more pounds to lose, and that didn't sound too appealing. The diet is high protein and low carb. I was surprised to learn how many things have carbs, like carrots, peas, corn, and beets. I'm excited to change my eating habits so I look and feel better.

The hardest part has been the water. They want you to drink 120 ounces of liquid a day. I nearly drowned the first week. I never drank that much water. Ever!!! The funny thing is, now that I'm used to drinking a lot of water I've noticed my joints don't hurt and I crave the water! I was completely dehydrated before and I didn't even know it.

I'm amazed at how great I feel. I've only had hunger pains a few times. I'm not craving my old carbs, and I'm losing weight! I've lost 7.2 pounds in my first three weeks.

I love cooking and being creative with food. I'll post anything tasty I think you might like.

That's it for now!

Cheers,
Kris

Started my morning w/ a cup of very plain coffee, it was fine, but I must admit, I REALLY like my added vanilla flavoring!  But probably the best part is I'm now only drinking 1 cup!
Protein shake w/ spinach & blueberries for breakfast and a spin on the stationary bike this morning~ getting ready to head out for another soccer Sunday- carrots, string cheese, cashews & LOTs of water packed & ready- hoping this will help keep me away from all the really bad food choices that are served at the fields.  Although I guess if I get incredibly hungry, subway is right down the street for a quick chopped salad-  here's to another day of making good choices!

Friday, January 3, 2014

Today is Friday January 3rd and I'm a little under the weather. Woke up with a cold and sore throat. Waaaah. But that's okay, I won't let it derail me. I started a diet last Sunday and I've stuck to it all week. So far I've lost 5.4 lbs! My sister joined a program called JumpStartMD up in the Bay Area and seeing her at Christmas inspired me. She has already lost 7.2 lbs in 3 weeks. She has shared all her diet materials with me and it makes so much sense! It's basically a very low to almost zero carb diet. The idea is that if you starve your body of carbs, then it will only have fat stores to use for energy. This is called reaching "ketosis" and it happens after about 48 hours of not eating carbs. This means no pasta, bread or grains.  It's all about proteins and veggies.  And it's also largely about leveling out your blood sugar levels so that you stop the vicious cycle of hunger and sugar cravings.

The Plan says you have to eat breakfast within 30 mins of waking up and then you have to eat every 3 hours thereafter for a total of 3 meals and 2 snacks. You are allowed to have unlimited amounts of lighter lettuce (romaine, iceberg, red leaf), 1 cup of darker lettuces (spinach and kale), eight one-ounce servings of lean proteins, 2 servings of fruit, and 2 whole cups of other veggies (measured raw and not including carrots!). You must drink 8 twelve-ounce beverages (preferably water or zero cal only). Only one caffeinated drink allowed. You should also drink one 8 ounce glass of non-fat milk and take a multivitamin everyday. Moderate exercise only is recommended for the first 6-8 weeks so as to not make you too hungry and derail your diet.

If you stick to the plan, you can lose 10 lbs a month! I'm aiming for 35 lbs. I'm 1/7 the way there 😊 I have to say that so far it hasn't been that hard to stick to the plan and I believe it's because right away my blood sugar leveled out and my cravings stopped.  Crazy! Between hitting a bad number on the scale and being inspired by my sister, this has turned out to be a goo time for me to change my eating habits. Eventually, once I've hit my goal weight, I plan to reintroduce a few carbs back into my diet, but only a few per day. Any more than that and the weight will creep back on.

I can't wait to feel lighter and better.  I'm tired of my pants not fitting. I'm tired of feeling lethargic. I'm tired of having achy legs at the end of the day. I'm tired of going to bed feeling full.  I'm tired of craving sweets and chips and crackers all the time. I'm tired of overheating. I'm just too heavy for my frame.

If you're in a similar boat as me, then feel free to join me on getting healthy and fit once again. It's a lifetime struggle and it's time to get focused. We've done it before and we can do it again.

Are you in?

Cheers! Kathy
